About
The Bangalore-Mysuru Expressway is a 117 km ten-lane access-controlled expressway connecting Bengaluru to Mysuru in Karnataka, opened by Prime Minister Modi on 12 March 2023. The expressway cuts the Bengaluru-Mysuru travel time from 3 hours (on the older NH-275) to 75 minutes.
The alignment provides 6+4 lane configuration — six lanes (3+3) of access-controlled main carriageway plus two lanes (1+1) of service road on each side for local traffic. This dual-system design is unusual in Indian expressway practice and was chosen because the corridor passes through dense agrarian belts where farm-vehicle access at frequent intervals would otherwise be blocked.
The expressway features 11 elevated bypasses around towns (Bidadi, Ramanagara, Channapatna, etc.), 4 rail-over-bridges, and 2 major Cauvery river bridges. NHAI delivered the project in 4 packages at ₹8,480 crore between 2018 and 2023. The ROW also incorporates a parallel pedestrian and bicycle pathway in some sections.
The expressway has dramatically increased connectivity between Bengaluru's tech corridors and Mysuru's heritage zone, though it has faced criticism for high toll rates and a contentious safety record (15+ fatal accidents in the first six months). Speed-limit reductions and median barriers were retrofitted after public pressure in late 2023.
